Enclosures The Spectra sauna is designed to be used in a small closet or bathroom. This setup will work fine in most cases and prevents the need for a separate enclosure taking up space in the room. Positioning the heat lamps closely together produces an additive effect, where the overall temperature is increased to 138 - 170 degrees Fahrenheit in the area 12 to 18 inches from the heat lamps. This higher temperature gradient eliminates the need for smaller enclosures, low ventilation sealed enclosures, reflective material, or other various setups used in the past. With the Spectra sauna in-line design, we can focus on heating the body instead of heating the enclosure. Using the sauna The Spectra sauna is designed to lean up against a wall with no hanging or mounting necessary. Although not required, a small screw included at the back of the sauna can be used to secure it to the wall with a tie wrap or similar fixture. Total height of the sauna is 47 inches. The top lamp is centered 7 inches from top, bottom lamp is centered 16 inches from bottom. When seated in front of the sauna for an individual of average height, the top lamp is at face height, bottom lamp is at waist height. A small chair, wood stool, or adjustable shower stool works well in the seated position. The User Guide included with each purchase shows how to use the sauna while in the lying down or standing positions. Lamp guards, screening The Spectra sauna is sold without heat lamp guards or metal screening, and in many cases they are unnecessary for adults who can maintain the recommended distance from the lamps. However, a protective metal screen can provide extra peace of mind, especially for those with preexisting conditions, who are elderly, or disabled. For individuals who would like to use a metal screen, several options are available. A series of pictures at the top of this page show the Spectra sauna with a 36" x 36" (36 inches long x 10 inches diameter) protective metal screen. The screen is secured to the sauna frame using 2" opening x 6" long spring clamps. In this case, the on/off switch is readily accessible at the bottom of the sauna. Alternately, the screen can be attached closer to the base of the sauna frame to prevent access to the on/off switch. In this case, the power cord can be connected to a surge protector as the on/off switch. Options available for screening material include galvanized mesh and stainless steel woven mesh. Both of these materials have a high temperature rating suitable for use with the sauna. The metal screen is conductive and dissipates most of the heat quickly to the surrounding environment remaining safe to the touch. Heavy-duty scissors or wire cutters can be used to cut the metal screen. The metal screen (also called hardware cloth) and spring clamps described here are available in most hardware stores, including Home Depot and Menards which both have the 1/2 in. x 3 ft. x 5 ft. metal screen. Higher maximum temperature The Spectra sauna allows the user to quickly adjust the desired heat level and power density by changing the distance from the heat lamps. Temperature readings directly in front of the heat lamps are 170 degrees (77 Celsius) at 12 inch distance, and 138 degrees (59 Celsius) at 18 inch distance. By comparison the maximum temperature produced by far infrared saunas is limited to about 150 degrees in many cases. This results in a moderate sweat and not the full drenching sweat produced by a properly designed heat lamp sauna. Penetration depth Far infrared wavelengths penetrate the body about 1 millimeter. Near and mid infrared wavelengths have greater penetrating power up to 10 millimeters, and the radiant heat is absorbed in a larger skin volume. Surface area Many infrared saunas emit heat in a wide surface area evenly distributing the heat throughout the sauna enclosure, where heat lamps focus the heat on a smaller surface area. Smaller surface area combined with increased penetration depth results in a superior sweat therapy and detoxification experience. Power density measurements Power density measurements for the Spectra sauna are 66 mW/cm2 at 24 inch distance, 121.6 mW/cm2 at 18 inches, and 144.6 mW/cm2 at 12 inches. Here is a list of commonly used 250 watt red heat lamps and power density measurements at 12 inch distance. The readings are for a single heat lamp at the peak power density, which is a small area about 1/4 inch in diameter at the center of the lamp. General Electric - 149.5 mW/cm2 Philips - 83.76 mW/cm2 Thermalight - 143.1 mW/cm2 Feit Electric - 44.51 mW/cm2 Bulbrite - 25.26 mW/cm2 Rubylux - 59.77 mW/cm2 Therabulb - 55.33 mW/cm2 For each individual General Electric lamp the power density can vary considerably from 100 - 150 mW/cm2 at 12 inch distance. Many of the other lamps listed here will also vary in power density. Overall power density and heating potential depends the total number of heat lamps, how closely together the lamps are located, and the design or layout. The lamps are highly directional, and pointing the lamps directly at the body will significantly increase both power density and heat output at the surface of the body. The Spectra sauna design provides a consistent power density and heat output from top lamp to bottom lamp. Heat lamps General Electric heat lamps are recommended having the combination of high heat output, high power density, low cost, and long lifespan. Here is a comparison of commonly used 250 watt red heat lamps and temperature readings at 12 inch distance. General Electric - 118 degrees F Philips - 116 degrees F Thermalight - 116 degrees F Feit Electric - 96 degrees F Bulbrite - 92 degrees F Rubylux - 92 degrees F Therabulb - 82 degrees F Electromagnetic field measurements Incandescent heat lamp saunas are low in electromagnetic fields (EMFs) by design. Carbon and ceramic heating elements commonly used in far infrared wood box or tent style saunas are normally high in EMFs, and should be shielded correctly to protect the user. Some infrared sauna manufacturers claim they are "low EMF" or even "zero EMF" by not reporting electric field or body voltage measurements. EMF measurements are recorded for the Spectra sauna as follows. Induced body voltage at 12 inch distance = 309 milliVolts Magnetic field at 12 inch distance = .4 milliGaussInduced body voltage for power cord at 1 inch distance = 364 milliVoltsMagnetic field for power cord at 1 inch distance = 1.4 milliGauss Payment & Shipping Free shipping to the continental 48 US states.
